Here's a slick little demo from this New England band that are bound to turn some heads with their brand of crushing metal. Motherboar are a bit similar in style to Mastodon as both bands have a very busy sound going complete with killer riffs that lean to the sludge/rock n' roll side of things, hoarse vocal shouts, some shredding solo action and a militant drumming assault. While this description might make you think these guys are Mastodon clones the fact of the matter is other than the very busy vibe both bands give off, Motherboar is a completely different trip. These guys combine ultra-groovy sludge, hardcore, straight-up metal and a little bit of Motorhead boogie for one of the tightest sounding demos I've heard in awhile. They get right down to business with the ass-kicking opener "Terrordactyl" which combines a punishing metal/hardcore assault with some deep sludge grooves and lots of little awesome change-ups in the sound throughout. Hell this song would be worth its weight in gold for the solo towards the end alone, but the song is a keeper from start to finish. "Now you Fear" is easily my favorite of the three songs though with it's punked-up Motorhead on speed attitude that gives way to ripping sludge grooves once again, sort of a Mastodon, Motorhead and Iron Monkey crossbreed type sound to this song and I love it! The disc is wrapped up with "Put your Knife" a far more traditional metal song, with some dual guitar action that really gets the blood pumping and as the song slices and dices towards the end they still manage to sneak in some killer grooves that completely suck me in everytime. All in all this is a damn fine demo from a band who should definitely be able to nail a label and get a crushing long-player out there. This is something worth checking out for all sludge fans out there who don't mind their sludge mutated and full of other interesting elements including classic metal, punk and hardcore. Hell, after each listen of this demo I'm still not even sure if I could call this stuff sludge, I mean it's got elements of sludge but there's so much more going on here. At any rate though, check these guys out because they kick ass and have a unique sound going through and through! Damn good stuff and hail the terrordactyl!!!!
