I've heard these songs a bunch of times. I've heard them on Myspace. I've downloaded some shitty mp3s and Kenny, the lead singer, also happens to write for this site. When the time came to review this EP I had just encoded it onto iTunes and put it at end of my playlist and that was that.
I had *just* downloaded the new God Forbid song they put up and was rockin' out to that when I got incredibly involved in some lame on-line argument (I dunno, maybe it was one of those Superman vs. Darth Vader things - you know, internet crap) and lost track of what I was listening to. Once I put the finishing touches on my blazing inferno of internet righteousness I concentrated on the music and suddenly thought "Damn, God Forbid is amazingly groovy! This shit is tight!" and, upon looking at iTunes I noticed it was powering through 'Terrordactyl' by Motherboar.
So yeah, this EP is fucking awesome. It's got a heavy stoner-metal groove combining frantic Mastodon-esque rhythms and heavy chugging guitars like the bastard love-child of the last Corrosion of Conformity LP and Clutch. You will snap your neck banging your head to their brakedowns, I guarantee. Kenny's vocals surprised me as well - his usual spacy drawl (sorry man) has been replaced by a set of lungs on fire! There's some real power here and it's completely in your face.
There will be a lot of you readers out there who claim bias and you're entirely right. I love stoner metal! And I am brutally honest to my friends as well - if I feel their work isn't so hot I'll say it straight up. No lie. But I am telling you the honest-to-god truth when I say that Motherboar is hot shit and this EP fucking kills.
